Emergencies

Emergencies are a common problem in dentistry. They can occur both through neglect or through accidents. Obviously then, having regular checkups and looking after problems when they are still small, can avoid many dental emergencies. We highly recommend this strategy as both cost effective and time-efficient. However even when one is conscientious, emergencies will still occur. At one time or another, you may experience any one of the following common problems:
    1) Severe toothache
    2) Fractured tooth
    3) Lost filling
    4) Loose crown or bridge
    5) Broken denture
    6) Marked swelling
    7) Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain together with clicking and difficulty in opening
    8) Bleeding and painful gums and other soft tissues in the mouth

Where a toothache is severe, possibly with marked swelling, or where a fractured tooth involves the nerve when there is bleeding from the centre leading to extreme sensitivity, it is better to have it examined as soon as possible. Most other emergencies can wait a day or two. Of course, where the problem affects the appearance of one's smile, the sooner it can be taken care of, the better it is for one's well-being. If one has a fractured back tooth not involving the nerve, however, and they find themselves out of town, all that needs to be done at the moment is to smooth the sharp edge with an emery board, and this only if it is irritating the surrounding soft tissue. No matter what the emergency is, however, we will always make it a priority to take care of the immediate need the same day. When our office is closed, Dr. Paul Jesin will be happy to take your emergency phone call at his home number, which is available to all of his patients. As an alternative when he is away, and the other doctors at the clinic cannot be reached, we have found that the Dental Emergency Service is available to provide qualified treatment. It is located at 1650 Yonge St., two blocks north of the St. Clair subway. The telephone number is 485-7121.
