More and more patients are concerned by the shape and colour of their teeth and the beauty of their smile. The first priority should be to have pink, healthy gums and clean teeth. Once this has been achieved, other flaws can be corrected. If the front teeth are a nice shape and have smooth enamel but are dark, they can easily be bleached by a home bleaching technique. This procedure should be strictly monitored by a dentist, since some of the advertised bleaching agents can cause softening of white fillings and may be too harsh on the gums. Where the front surfaces of the teeth need a change of shape or have poor quality enamel, but the teeth are generally healthy, porcelain veneers may be the right procedure. Veneers are thin, lab-made porcelain fronts which are bonded onto the teeth. They can truly make a dramatic difference in appearance, and can be compared to the effect of changing the front surfaces of kitchen cabinetry. Sometimes, when a person smiles, silver fillings shining through bicuspid and first molar teeth can be seen. This may be a problem for a performer or for anyone concerned with aesthetics. In most cases, they can be replaced with the new, stronger white fillings, or sometimes with extra-strong, heat-treated tooth-coloured inlays. These are just a few of the procedures available in the rapidly advancing field of cosmetic dentistry. Each individual's problem is different and of course, should be assessed with a creative eye for what is bestsuited for that case.
